The Five Elements Explained
At the heart of Chinese metaphysics are five energies — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water. Everything, including you, is a shifting mix of these five.
Two cycles that rule everything
The elements are not a list; they are a living system with two directions of motion:
- Generating (相生): Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth yields Metal, Metal carries Water (condensation), Water grows Wood.
- Overcoming (相克): Wood parts Earth, Earth dams Water, Water douses Fire, Fire melts Metal, Metal cuts Wood.
Balance between the two cycles is the goal — too much or too little of any element shows up as a life theme.
What each element means
- 🌳 Wood (木) — growth, vision, new beginnings. Color: green & teal.
- 🔥 Fire (火) — passion, warmth, expression. Color: red, purple & coral.
- ⛰️ Earth (土) — stability, care, grounding. Color: yellow, brown & beige.
- ⚔️ Metal (金) — clarity, precision, refinement. Color: white, gold & silver.
- 🌊 Water (水) — wisdom, depth, flow. Color: black & blue.
Your element and your colors
Each day carries an element, and dressing in that day's lucky colors is a simple way to align with its energy. The rule: wear the element of the day plus the element that feeds it, and avoid the colors that clash with it.
